MARGARET JULIA WEERTS, 97, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018. Memorial service is 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2131 Getz Road, Fort Wayne, with calling one hour prior.
By the grace of God Margaret Julia (nee Dicke) Weerts received the crown of life on September 20, 2018.
Margaret, the oldest child of Edward A. and Edith C. (nee Klinkenberg) Dicke, was born on September 14, 1921, at Ijuhy, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Her elementary education was in a Lutheran school in Ijuhy, at Trinity First Lutheran School in Minneapolis, MN and at St. John Lutheran School, Minnesota Lake, MN. She was confirmed in the Christian faith on May 19, 1935. Margaret attended the high school department of Bethany Lutheran College, Mankato, MN for three of the four years of high school, taking the third year of high school at Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE. She graduated from high school at Bethany Lutheran College on June 7, 1940.
Her college education included two years at Concordia Teachers College (1940-42) and several sessions of summer school at Concordia College, St. Paul, MN.
Margaret was married to Edward Weerts on July 16, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Long Prairie, MN. Margaret and Edward had four children: Jon David (Gail), Gretchen Louise Young (James), Joel Edward (Gretchen), and Luke Alan (Christine). In addition, there are grandchildren: Peter Weerts (deceased 2011), Matthew Weerts, Andrew Weerts (Samantha), Marta Lewis (Drew), Christopher Young, and Jason Grebasch (Sarah). Jackson Grebasch and Remy Lewis are great-grandchildren.
Margaret’s teaching career included positions at St. John Lutheran School, Arlington Township, MN, St. Paul Lutheran School, Yorktown, IA, Gethsemane Lutheran School, St. Paul, MN, Redeemer Lutheran School, Wayzata, MN, and St. James Lutheran School, Howard Lake, MN. Margaret retired in 1984.
Her life has been a life of service due to the gracious mercy and love of the Lord. Those remaining to celebrate this gracious entrance to eternal life are her husband of 74 years, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends in the many places in which God so graciously permitted her to serve
