Lorraine Joyce (Stout) Sower was born on July 21,1940, in Noble County, Indiana and lived her entire life there, primarily on the beautiful 180+ year-old family homestead that she maintained with her husband Larry. She was called home to glory on February 2, 2025, after a brief illness.
Lorraine was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church, serving as a member of the former Vesper Circle, and as Archangel (chairwoman) of the Guardian Angels. Over the years she planned & organized countless funeral dinners, social events, and coordinated the design and sewing of numerous banners used throughout the church.
Lorraine was also a founding member of the Fun & Fancy Noble Co. Home Extension Club, being at the time of her death the only still-active founding member (62 years). At the County level she was a Past President, organized the first Cookie Festival, and served on the Festival Committee for over 25 years. She was honored as the Homemaker of the Year in 2016.
Lorraine had a generous heart for service. She was a 4-H leader for many years and worked with the state in expanding Gene Stratton Porter State Memorial to include the old Sower Farm, that now features the recently restored historic barn and the Sower House Shoppe and Tea Room. She served on the Purdue Extension Board, and the Sweet Church Community Center Board, and helped in that capacity to organize a wide range of community events and more funeral dinners. Along with her husband Larry, she was an active member of the Noble Co. Gas & Steam Club.
She was an expert seamstress and loved to sew and bake for her many causes, being particularly known for her Elderberry pies. She was the greatest cheerleader for her children and grandchildren supporting their events and passions and relished her role in organizing reunions with her classmates from the Albion High School class of ‘58.
Lorraine is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Larry Sower; and her children: Brenda (Mike) Koza, Shelly (Paul) Matthews, and Bryan Sower (Andrea); as well as, her grandchildren, Brittney and Chris Koza, Forrest and Parker Matthews, Sophia and Emma Sower and her great-grandchildren, Gwen Matthews and Adler Matthews.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church, 600 N., Kendallville with Pastor John Roberts presiding. There will be visitation at the church an hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Paul Matthews, Forrest Matthews, Parker Matthews, Christopher Koza, Brittney Koza, and Kevin Chester. Honorary bearers include Dennis Ackerman, Don Ackerman, Randy Ackerman, Mike Ackerman, Norman Strater, and Doug Dobmeyer.
