Karen Janette Smith, 71, formerly of Jackson Michigan, passed away at her home in Kendallville Indiana on July 26,2021. Karen was born in Jackson Michigan in May 1950. A graduate of Jackson High School and Western Michigan University, Karen was an educator for 38 years in the Jackson Public Schools. Her last twelve years of teaching were spent as a 2nd grade teacher at Cascades Elementary School. Miss Smith was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Jackson Women’s Club and MARSP.
Karen is survived by her sister, Kathy (Art) Smith of Kendallville Indiana. Her beloved nieces and nephews, Nathanael of Woodland California and his children, Ethan, Caitlin, and Aedan; Hannah of Vacaville California; Emily of Vacaville California; Micah (April) of Kendallville Indiana and their children, Abigail and Lydia; and Benjamin (Allison) of Vacaville California and their children, Hudson, Anne, Owen and Carson. Her godson, Matthew Halmekangas, and special friends, Max Behncke, Alexandria and Samuel Arvy.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Gracia Smith and her brother, Steven Smith.
A graveside memorial service is planned for a later date at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Jackson Michigan. TBA
Memorial contributions can be made to the Scholarship Fund of the First Presbyterian Church or ‘Natalie’s Garden’ at the Dahlem Center, Jackson Michigan.
