Stephen H. Lewis

Stephen Hinsdale (Steve) Lewis, 73, passed away on July 26, 2017 in Fort Wayne, Indiana
following a short illness. He was born on October 22, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois to M.E. (Ed) and
Ann (Bateman) Lewis. A graduate of Morgan Park High School in Chicago, he attended the
University of Michigan, graduating with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture in
1966 and a Master’s in Mathematics in 1972. In 1975 he became a Fellow of the Society of
Actuaries. He then earned a Master’s of Business Administration from Northwestern
University’s Kellogg School of Business in 1981.
Steve began his career as an actuary at Continental National Assurance (CNA) in Chicago in
1972, leaving in 1981 to join First Penn Pacific, an independent subsidiary of Lincoln National
in Oakbrook, Illinois. There he served first as Vice President then as Chief Executive Officer. In
1995 he moved to Lincoln’s home office in Fort Wayne where he served as Senior Vice
President until his retirement in 2001.
He was predeceased by his parents and his oldest brother Mac. He is survived by his wife of
forty six years, Jeanne (Gerlach) and daughter Karen, by his brothers Mike (Marilyn) and Bret
(Joan), sister-in- law Anne (Forsyth), by six nieces and a nephew and by nine grandnieces and
two grandnephews. He was much loved and will be sorely missed.
Funeral services will be private.
