Daniel W. Cleland

Daniel W. Cleland, age 91, of Fort Wayne IN, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017, at Woodview Healthcare. He was born on March 19, 1925 in Toledo, Ohio and entered active service with the United States Navy on his 18th birthday. Dan honorably served his country during World War II where he participated in the invasions of Normandy and Southern France. He was near Guam, headed for Japan, when the first atomic bomb was dropped. After the war, Dan and Carolyn Jean Metzger married and had five children.  They were married for 69 years.  Dan worked as a district manager for General Electric and retired in 1985. His jobs provided opportunities to live in Fort Wayne IN, Columbus OH, New Orleans LA and Louisville KY. Dan and Jean spent 21 years in Winter Haven Florida enjoying their retirement before returning to Fort Wayne in 2005.  

Survivors include Dan’s wife, Jean Cleland of Fort Wayne; daughters, Julie (Steven) Scott of Fort Wayne IN and Patricia Fraser of Maineville, OH; sons, Timothy (Wendy) Cleland of Delaware, OH and Donald Cleland of Delaware, OH; nine Grandchildren and seven Great-Grandchildren; sister, Betty (Donald) Bethan of Toledo, Ohio.  Daniel was preceded in death by his parents Arthur Cleland and Clara (Krause) Cleland; son, Thomas D. Cleland; and sister, Bernice Lusk.

A private family memorial service and burial with military honors will be held on March 25, 2017 at Highland Park Cemetery.
The family extends their deepest thanks to everyone that cared for Dan during his final years.
